‘King’ by Florence And The Machine – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
Florence And The Machine angelically return, and their new single, ‘King’, places them back in their rightful place at the forefront of the music industry. It’s a release that gives us goosebumps and causes the hairs on the back of our necks to stand on end the moment Florence Welch reaches for the microphone.
Florence And The Machine are undeniably one of the most influential indie bands to emerge from the UK in recent decades, constantly developing their sound and pushing the envelope with each performance. Also, they never put their creative box away and they continue to captivate us with each new delivery; this one is no exception.
‘King’, which blends baroque pop with indie and folk textures, is as mighty as they come. Also, frontwoman Florence Welch picks us up and takes us on a pilgrimage with her wordplay. Her words are relatively ambiguous, and the singer leaves it up to the listener to determine what they mean. However, it appears to be about rediscovering oneself, almost like a rebirth.
Florence said about the release: “As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much. I just got on with it. I was as good as the men, and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the future.”
“I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modelled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time, I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not.”
