Former Smiths member Johnny Marr has opened up about his growing weariness with the state of rock music. The musician, who is known for his influential contributions to the genre, particularly during his time with The Smiths, expressed his dissatisfaction with the prevalent themes in rock music today.

In a recent interview with the i newspaper, Marr revealed that his frustration with the genre led him to explore different avenues when he released his debut studio album, ‘The Messenger,’ in 2013. Marr expressed his disdain for the overwhelming focus on “adversity” and “feelings” in the lyrics of many rock bands.

“In 2013, when I did the first solo album, the reason I’m singing about architecture so much is because I used it as a device to write songs that I wanted to sing,” Marr explained. “Everyone seemed to be singing about this adversity that we’re all going through. And I know we are going through adversity, I get it. But I got really tired of rock music.”
