I first came across Ghostpoet at a Biffy Clyro gig in Scarborough in summer 2019. By heck, I miss going to live shows. Roll on the end of lockdown.
I was pretty blown away by his sound in Yorkshire. He is distinct and raw. You do not go and see Ghostpoet and come away thinking the performance was ‘normal’. But he does not do things by the book and good on him; I would not want it any other way.
So, fast forward almost a year since I saw him on June 19, and he has a new track out ‘Nowhere To Hide Now’. From the get-go, it is quirky and experimental (What you would expect). It kicks off with a harrowing guitar riff and solo drum beat before a breathtaking performance from the London songwriter and poet.
Furthermore, Ghostpoet really has found a knack for singing in a low key and making it sound energetic and full of charisma. The vocalist pretty much speaks his sweet tongue. As a result, he does not sing in the ordinary sense, but it works well. He sounds a lot like ‘Faithless’, in my opinion. I will let you in on a little secret, when I first saw him live, I did think it was ‘Faithless’ at first. I had to Google him to check that it was not the same guy (I can confirm they are different people).
Overall, The chorus is a strong point for me in this release. It is catchy and bites hard. I also like the more intense sound which we hear within the chorus sections. The lead guitar is strikingly prominent and makes for significant effect within the track.
