Evan Stein from EMG stopped by for a chat!

Colby: Can you share the story of Experience Music Group and what inspired you to start the agency?

Evan: Experience Music Group was born out of a passion for empowering independent artists and wanting to help reshape the landscape of the music industry. Two decades ago, my partner Martin and I envisioned a space where emerging musicians could not only create incredible music but also navigate the complex realms of branding, digital marketing, and music licensing to truly make a mark.

My journey in the music industry exposed me to the untapped potential in areas like sync licensing, where many artists struggled to gain visibility. Recognizing this gap, Experience Music Group was founded with a mission to provide comprehensive support. We go beyond traditional roles by not only helping artists define their ‘Why’ but also by creating strategies that leverage their uniqueness in the world of branding and sync opportunities.

Our boutique agency is a testament to the belief that every artist has a distinctive story to tell, and through meticulous branding, strategic digital marketing, and effective sync placements, we aim to amplify their voices. The inspiration behind Experience Music Group lies in our desire to democratize success in the music industry, ensuring that deserving artists receive the guidance and opportunities they need to thrive.

It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness the artists we work with not only find their purpose but also build sustainable careers. Our 20-year journey reflects a commitment to innovation, empowerment, and a deep-rooted love for music, driving us to redefine the way artists navigate and succeed in the dynamic world of the music business.

Colby: In the realm of indie artists, how does Experience Music Group differentiate itself from other agencies?

Evan: Experience Music Group stands out as a boutique agency with a distinctive approach that goes beyond traditional artist representation. What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to empowering independent artists holistically, addressing not only their musical prowess but also delving deep into the realms of branding, digital marketing, and strategic sync opportunities.

Our differentiation begins with a personalized touch. At Experience Music Group, we don’t just see artists as clients; we see them as unique storytellers. We go the extra mile to help them discover their ‘Why,’ to understand the essence of their music and the narrative they want to convey. This foundational step sets the stage for a customized branding strategy that resonates authentically with their audience.

Where we truly stand out is in our comprehensive approach. Many agencies focus solely on music representation, but we understand that success for indie artists requires a multifaceted strategy. From refining branding and imagery to advising on digital asset optimization and crafting a compelling narrative, we guide artists through every step of their journey.

Our expertise in sync licensing further distinguishes us. With over 20 years in the business, we’ve cultivated strong relationships and insights into the sync world. This allows us to not only pitch artists’ music effectively but also to educate them on the intricacies of the sync business—from metadata management to crafting songs specifically for sync.

Colby: As the founder of EMG, what do you think is the key to succeed in the music industry?

Evan: I believe the key to succeeding in the music industry lies in a multifaceted approach that goes beyond creating great music. While artistic talent is undoubtedly crucial, navigating the complexities of today’s music landscape requires artists to become storytellers.

First and foremost, artists need to discover their ‘Why.’ What drives them? What makes their music unique and compelling? This intrinsic understanding becomes the foundation for effective branding, helping artists connect authentically with their audience. Branding, imaging, and messaging are integral components that elevate an artist from being a mere creator to becoming a brand with a story.

In the digital age, a strong online presence is non-negotiable. Therefore, mastering digital strategy is another key element. This involves optimizing digital assets, creating engaging content, and strategically utilizing social media and other digital platforms to amplify an artist’s voice. It’s about connecting directly with fans and building a loyal following of super fans.

Lastly, embracing the world of sync licensing is a game-changer. The ability to place music in commercials, films, TV shows, and video games not only broadens an artist’s reach but also provides crucial revenue streams. Understanding the intricacies of the sync business, from metadata management to effective pitching, is a skill set that sets successful artists apart.

Colby: Lastly, what is your favourite song of all time?

Evan: As for my favorite song of all time, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen holds a special place in my heart. Its infectious energy and ability to evoke joy and a sense of invincibility resonate deeply with me. I love the song’s theme of seizing the moment, enjoying life to the fullest, and embracing an unstoppable spirit. “Don’t Stop Me Now” is a musical anthem that exudes positivity, and its trademark multitrack harmony vocals for the chorus showcase Queen’s unparalleled artistry.
