Jones Monroe, the pioneering musician from Texas, came by to speak with Colby.
Colby: Hello, Jones. It’s a pleasure to speak with you. To begin with, you started playing the piano at the age of five, which is rather outstanding. You must have known from an early age that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Jones: I didn’t know what I wanted to do with music when I was younger but, I always knew It was a part of me. Music like so many other artists became my outlet and escape. Playing the piano makes me feel at peace and singing helps me deal with my emotions.
Colby: Do you recall the first album you ever listened to and said to yourself, “Wow!”
Jones: I’m so in love with so many genres of music from all over the world. The first album that really grabbed my soul lyrically was Emeli Sande’s “Our Version of Events” and the first Albums that made me were Ray Charles “The Birth of Soul” and Aretha Franklins “I’ve Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You”
Colby: You grew up in Texas, which is home to some of the world’s best musicians. Have you been inspired by the stars who have previously risen from your state? If so, who?
Jones: I have been inspired by so many Texas musicians including the soulful sounds from Gary Clark Jr. (Austin, Texas) and Leon Bridges (Fort Worth, Texas).
Colby: Your new album is incredibly striking, as well as very heartfelt; could you tell our readers a bit about the record’s meaning?
Jones: The new album I’m releasing is really inspired by today’s current events and the rapid change in society. My latest single “Black” was formed from the tragic George Floyd situation. My followup single “Backbone” is a continuation of encouragement from discrimination but targeted for the world and the rest of the album really speaks some messages of truth and love. I wrote this album with a song for everyone even though it was unknowingly at the time of conception.
Colby: Lastly, what do you have planned for the rest of 2021?
Jones: I’m really excited for the rest of 2021 I’m currently on a media tour and am going to be releasing an EP in the late Fall. I really want everyone to feel included on my journey with me.
